Organization of the Day

Greeting Time

The morning separation time is different for each family, as they have developed their own ways for saying goodbye. Few children arrive before 7:00 a.m.; those who do are greeted in a room with a mixed age group. Those who arrive after 7:00 a.m. are greeted in their own classroom. This is a perfect time for families and staff to communicate with each other and share any concerns or special instructions for the day. Arrivals take place between 6:00 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. Kindergarten begins promptly at 8:00 a.m.

Early Morning/Late Afternoon

As children arrive, they can make activity choices in the classroom. They are encouraged to explore and collaborate with one another and their teachers. Center exploration takes place before morning circle time between 7: 00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. As children start to go home in the late afternoon, children get the opportunity to work and play in mixed age groups between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Snack Time

Snacks are served in the classroom and children are invited to take turns to visit the snack tables. Teachers remind children to wash their hands and supervise them to make sure it is done correctly. Early morning snack is served between 7:10-7:30 a.m. and afternoon snack is served between 2:35 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. A late snack is also offered between 4:40 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Circle Time

The entire class meets together during Circle Time as a transition from the early morning center explorations to small group work time. The children and the teachers sing songs together, share important classroom news and happenings, and discuss any projects and themes. They also pick classroom helpers for the day. They read the morning message of the day and are given their journal assignment for the day. Circle Time takes place between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.

Journal Writing Time

Each child completes a page in his or her journal every day. They are asked to share something they have done that day or something that they are thinking about. Children are supported to use a variety of techniques to improve their writing skills. They practice writing the alphabet, numbers, dictating stories, using their alphabet sound knowledge to write phonetically, copying words written in the daily morning message, etc. Children take turns going to the journaling tables while others engage in center exploration. Journaling takes place between 10:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Small Group Work/Center Exploration

Children work in small groups in the classroom while others complete their journals and the rest explore centers. A small group works with a teacher typically on a hands-on activity in literacy to introduce and review lessons from the reading readiness program. The rest of the children select an area of the classroom to work in, often with a creative presentation set up by the teachers to help enhance their time in that area. While one works with the small groups, another teacher in the room circulates throughout the room and helps support and extend the children's learning experience by offering suggestions, helping them resolve issues, and make notes of any important observations regarding the children's development. Children are also encouraged to visit the breakfast table at this time in between their small group work and center exploration. Small group time/Center Exploration time/Journaling takes place between 10:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Breakfast is served from 9:25 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Afternoon Center explorations and small group work time occurs between 12:00 p.m. and 1:50 p.m. During the afternoon small group time, children work with a teacher on math activities. Children who stay later are given more center exploration time between 3:45 p.m. and 4:35 p.m. and again from 5:15 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Outdoor Exploration

Children are taken outside daily, weather permitting. Children are given the opportunity to explore the outside playground and activities are planned daily to extend learning outside of the classroom. Outdoor exploration time occurs between 8:45 a.m. and 9:25 a.m.

Group Projects/Activities

The class gathers together at different times of the day to participate in different large group activities. Social studies and science projects take place between 11:00 a.m. and 11:25 a.m. Music and dance activities take place between 1:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. and again from 2:10 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Morning projects that need to be completed are continued from 3:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Lunch Time

While the class works on group projects and activities, two or three children are chosen to help the teacher set the table and prepare for lunch in the classroom. They count to make sure the proper number of place settings is set on the lunch tables. When the tables are ready, the children ail wash their hands and chose where to sit at the lunch tables. Lunch is served family style in large serving bowls. Children are encouraged to serve themselves with the supervision of the teachers. Children are encouraged to try a little bit of each food offered. Lunch time is between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Story Time

Children all gather together to listen to stories as a group. Teachers usually select a book from the classroom library or from the Center's resource room library. Story time takes place between 1:50 p.m. and 2:10 p.m. and again from 5:00 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.

Departures

Children can be picked up any time before 6:30 p.m. Special messages and highlights of the day are shared with families through conversations with the teachers. The Center closes promptly at 6:30 p.m.
